Flax seeds are one of the richest sources of lignans, a chemical found in the cell walls of plants. The primary lignan from flax seed is secoisolariciresinol diglucoside, or SDG.
After you consume SDG, it is metabolized by the natural microflora in the gastrointestinal system into the mammalian lignans, enterodiol and enterolactone, which have antioxidant properties to support the immune system and help promote and maintain healthy cholesterol levels.
